Trauma & Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Trauma can be viewed as an exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence, which can occur through direct experience, witnessing, learning about a close person's experience, or repeated professional exposure.
Traumatic events can occur as one-time, multiple, or long-lasting repetitive events.
These can range from serious accidents
Physical and sexual assault
Abuse, including childhood or domestic abuse
Work-related exposure to trauma, including remote exposure
Trauma related to serious health problems or childbirth experiences (for example, intensive care admission or neonatal death)
War and conflict
Torture
Overall, it can affect everyone completely differently. Some individuals can respond and heal uniquely, whilst some may remain fearful and affected immensely by their experience. The impact of trauma can be subtle, insidious, or outright destructive. This can have a negative lasting impact, which can then, in turn, develop into Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The negative impact of a traumatic event continues to be re-lived, traumatic & hurtful in the ‘ here and now’. As a result, one may feel on high alert, vigilant, fearful, thinking the worst, negatively thinking about oneself, having difficulty maintaining relationships, avoiding situations, places, friends, or family, feeling angry or numb, or turning to risky behaviours. Alternatively, one may feel far from present, out of body experiences, nightmares, flashbacks, or be highly anxious.
I truly understand and appreciate how difficult this time must be for you. I work in a field where I support many clients living with trauma, complex trauma, alongside psychosis. Just as I stand beside them, I’m here for you too, on your side, in your corner, to help bring light to what may feel like a very dark and heavy place.
Together, we will fight the psychological and physical distress that you are feeling. In my approach, I specifically use EMDR to take away your physical distress associated with the traumatic event.
