What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state of focused attention and heightened awareness. Have you ever felt completely relaxed or so absorbed in something that everything else faded into the background? If so, you’ve already experienced a form of hypnosis.

What makes clinical hypnosis different is the therapist’s ability to guide you into a deeper state of relaxation and access your subconscious mind. In this state, positive suggestions can be introduced to support emotional, behavioural, or cognitive change—both directly and indirectly.

Can I get stuck in hypnosis, or can my mind be controlled?

No! Despite being in a very relaxed state, you are fully aware and focused. If you feel uneasy, or if anything requires your attention, you can easily come back into full awareness of your surroundings immediately.

What does a particular session involve?

A Hypnotherapy session is very similar to any other form of psychological therapy. However, with a unique application. Generally, we will proceed with the session with a mood check-in and a conversation to explore how the week went. We may then review any homework set. Following this, the hypnosis process commences, often inducing a sense of initial relaxation and tranquility for most individuals. As this state of relaxation deepens, sensations of lightness, calmness, and the verge of dozing off may be apparent

Who Makes a Good Hypnotic Subject?

The best candidates for hypnotherapy aren’t those who are “easily hypnotised,” but those who are:

  • Curious and open to imagining

  • Willing to work collaboratively

  • Motivated and ready for change

  • Able to relax and explore inwardly

And if that doesn’t sound like you right now—don’t worry. Therapy is a journey, and change is a skill that can be developed. All I ask is that you come with an open mind and a willingness to work together. From there, growth and positive change become possible.

What is Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH)?

CBH is one of four main types of hypnotherapy, and one of the most structured and evidence-based approaches. Interestingly, hypnotherapy is considered the original form of psychotherapy, and modern research continues to confirm its effectiveness.

In my practice, I combine Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with hypnosis to enhance the speed and depth of therapeutic outcomes. CBT is a widely used form of talking therapy that focuses on how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours influence each other. It helps you identify unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviours, and replace them with healthier, more constructive ones.

By blending CBT with hypnosis, we create a powerful therapeutic experience that supports change both consciously and subconsciously.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Typically, I recommend a minimum of 6–8 sessions, depending on your individual goals and needs. Think of this as an investment in yourself, an opportunity to learn, grow, and heal at your own pace.
