Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
Is a goal-oriented psychotherapy that focuses on the ‘here and now’. It has been extensively researched and found to be effective for many mental health conditions ( Suma. P et al., 2023). It offers the opportunity to explore internal dialogues such as thoughts/images (cognition) and how these perceptions can influence the way we feel and behave.
Let’s say for example, an individual fails an exam test (situation), they may believe “ i am a failure” ( automatic thought). This may trigger a reaction of feeling upset (emotion) and subsequently crying ( physiology). Consequently, they may engage in studying intensely, giving up or withdraw from friends/family (behaviour).
A key focus within CBT is in formulation- that is working together to understand and make sense of what is happening & maintaining the problem now. This also leans into exploring past experiences to see how this may have shaped the lens to see the self, others and the world (Core belief/Schemas).
In CBT, what we do (behaviour) is in crucial in maintaining or in changing psychological states. An integral part to CBT is to look into both behaviour & thinking (cognition). It is through these two principles that affective change could occur.
CBT has demonstrated effectiveness in treating depression, panic/agoraphobia, generalised anxiety disorder, specific phobia, worry, OCD, & PTSD,.
